It's the Verstappen quirks for me! The way he repeats his answers in press cons. The way he has an answer prepared which is baiscally telling the whole race story, no matter what the first question he was asked is! It's the endless maxplaining! It's the way he cannot, for the life of him, answer a question of would you rather, he'd always go for "it all depends to be honest". It's how his voice goes super high sometimes and his friends make fun of him! It's his bored face in press conferences, and probably in teams meetings! It's his sarcasm and sense of humor that's so undoubtedly good. It's how he admitted to seeing the yellow flags in Mexico'19. How in every video of F1 he's the only one wearing a cap. How he decided to not change from flat caps to curved cause he's so darn stubborn. It's how he's actually the best driver in the world, the best driver for years to come, and still he's the most humble one of them all.

Q: Michael Schumacher, a close friend of your father, was like an uncle to you in your childhood. How did that feel? 

Max: There are many beautiful memories. We were on holidays together in France in the summer, but also in the winter. In retrospect, it’s something very beautiful and very special, although of course I wasn’t so aware of who I was playing with at the time.

Q: Who is the biggest sportsman of all time for you?

I always find it difficult to say, there have been so many great racing drivers in Formula 1. And as far as sportsmen in general are concerned, for me it means even more: I have no idea. 

Q: Your relationship with Lewis Hamilton?

We had our fights but there is also a lot of respect. He’s one of the biggest racing drivers there has ever been.

Q: How do you explain Formula 1 to a Martian who suddenly appears?

The first thing I hope is that we speak the same language, that’s the most important thing, otherwise nothing works (laughs).

Q: You are the first person to sign a contract as a Formula 1 driver without a driving licence. How did that feel?

Of course I was nervous about the driving test, because I only had one chance. Afterwards I wouldn’t have been home for two months, and I really wanted to get my driving licence before that. There was a lot of pressure. The driving instructor was strict and of course treated me like everyone else. But it worked out.

Q: Do you tend to invest in shares or cryptocurrencies?

No crypto so far!

Q: How do you rate yourself at FIFA?

Good. Not bad. No: Good. 

Q: What is your favourite thing to do in your free time?

My favourite hobby is actually driving the simulator.

For Max, the old adage holds true: “We don’t learn for school, but for life.” How else would he be so technically competent and so articulate? He speaks Limburgish (his mother tongue, common in the German-Dutch-Belgian border area), Dutch, German and English fluently, and also has some command of Italian, French and Portuguese.

As someone who sometimes watches question time, but not all the time. I thought Seb did very well.

It was clear he could not speak in great detail about some of the topics but he spoke well and made some very good statements about what was being talked about.
