Hey! Question real fast: I want to do this challenge, but I had a procedure done on my spine last Friday morning, so I'm out of commission for a while. Can these be turned in later than their original stage dates? I just want to make sure things would be cool to go once the pain in my back begins to subside.
Thanks!
Yes they can! The deadline for the classification is 22nd July 11:59 GMT, so as long as your stages are turned in before then there’s no issue!
As the Giro is underway, the peleton faces a test of individual skill- a time trial stage. And over in the fanwork classification, you know that it means the competitors for the maglia glitterata face their first of two challenge stages. For this stage, competitors must remix a fic (with permission) to succeed! Remixing a fic has a long history in fandom, and will be an interesting challenge for our competitors.
The challenge is explained further along with a link to a more in depth explanation of remxing here. Good luck!
We enter the first rest ready and eager to tackle the rest of the tour, but as the peloton rests its tired legs and reflects on what came before, so too, should the competitors for the glitter jersey.
Today's challenge is to write up one or more recommendations in a publicly accessible place for fanwork. As new work is created and new people join the fandom, it is important to celebrate the work that has delighted and inspired us so others can find it as well. This doesn't have to be just for fanfic. It can be webweaves, fanart, meta posts. What fanworks have brought you joy? What fanworks do you think will bring others joy? Why do you love them and want others to experience them?
If the recommendation list is on Tumblr, please tag @wtfanworkclassification. Otherwise, drop a link in the replies (or get one of the mods to do so) in this post so we can count it.
Stages 2 and 10 of the 2025 Giro are time trials, which means they are in the Fanwork Classification part of the Challenge Classification. Unlike the freedom of the other prompts, challenge prompts are meant to make it tricky for participants, making them take risks or try something new. To help you prepare, we've put some explanation and links to help you understand the two stages below. Good luck!
Stage 2: Remix a fic (with permission)
An explanation of what a remix is can be found here. Please remember, for this stage, to get permission before you post your remix. While etiquette around remxing and recursive fanfic is complex and changing, for purposes of this event you will need to ask permission of the author to remix one of their works, unless they have given blanket permission (check their profile or dashboard for this!). As a courtesy, please (if posting on ao3) use the 'inspired by' tag or if you're posting on tumblr link to the fic itself. While we won't check strictly, abiding by an honour system, if a remix is posted of your fic and you didn't give permission, please contact a mod and it will be removed from the collection for not fulfilling the prompt.
Stage 10: Write in the second person.
This challenge will only accept fic, meta or other textual work written in the second person (in fic this would be in the form of second-person narrative, but if other fanworks are used feel free to simply write in the second person only, such as for poetry.)
Best of luck to those that wish to challenge themselves!
they were all, yellow
(for the @wtfanworkclassification prompt "yellow")
(check out our faqs tag as well, as we answer asks about the classifcation there as well)
Do I have to post my work on the date of the stage? No! As this is a fest, you are free to post your works any time from when the collection opens to when the collection closes.
Can I make my fanworks ahead of time? Yes! As long as they are posted to the collection or on tumblr within the time the fanwork classifcation is open in, you can make your fanworks as far ahead as you want!
Can my fanwork count for two stages? No! One fanwork, one stage!
Do I have to do every stage? No! Do as few or as many as you want- if you want a smaller set of prompts to challenge, the categroy classifications are here for that- but completely a few or even just one stage is absolutely fine!
We hope that this answers a few of your most burning questions!
The results are in at last- and the mods would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2025 Giro Fanworks Classification. Whether you created a fanwork, commented, betaed, or cheered everyone one it is a net positive for Cycling RPF as a whole. But we do have some winners of the classifications to congratulate.
First, the general classification and thus the maglia glitterata has been won by a substantial margin by those who chose to post anonymously this classification. While this means the jersey cannot be formally awarded to any individual in particular, it does mean that whoever wishes to post anonymously next Giro is thus helping to defend the jersey. Congratulations to however many authors were involved in this- it was an impressive GC campaign!
For the individual campaigns hoelywritingsx won the hilly (or AU) classification, legendofthefireemblem won the mountain (or trope) classification and olympiaslover won the ITT (or challenge) classification. For the first of the gauntlets, Hyperspecific Week, the anonymous collective reigns supreme- perhaps another gauntlet will approach in the near future for people to try? Who knows! Nevertheless, congratulations to all our participants and we hope you all had a wonderful time! See you all soon for the Tour!
(admire the maglia glitterata below)
do multichapter works need to be complete to be included in the collection?
Nope, you can just post a single chapter to meet the challenge of a stage. But we are requiring that each stage be fulfilled by a separate work, so you can't use a new chapter for each stage.
For this mountain stage, our wonderful competitors must vanquish a trope that never gets old: Fake Dating! In other words, the people in your fanwork decide that they should make everyone else believe they’re together. Feel free to play with or invert this trope if you wish- the only limit is your own creativity!
Feel free to contact us on Discord or on Tumblr! There is no minimum word count for this stage.
(The lovely Sana helped write this post!)
The peleton continues on into the hills, and our competitors in the Fanwork Classification are faced with their second alternate universe prompt- the Mafia AU! How would your cyclists do in a world of organised crime?
We look forwards to seeing your creativity!
The timer counts down, and the peloton is nervous. The prologue time trial is no place for any mistakes to happen- and those looking to make GC bids will be nervous that their bid could end here. For our peloton, all eyes are still on the maillot chispeante. But despite individual competiton being paramount in all other stages, this Individual Time Trial is a challenge stage. And thus, to remind all of our competitors that cycling is, despite how it often portrays itself, a team sport, the first stage in both the general and challenge classifications is to celebrate working together. Therefore, the challenge for this stage requires you to co-create a fanwork with another competitor.
In detail: if this account is tagged on Tumblr with a submission, it must clearly tag the co-creator (or if they are only on Ao3, link to their account). On Ao3, you must submit a work with a co-creator (which you can add by following the guidelines here). If a work is submitted without a co-creator for this stage, it will not count (and on Ao3 will be removed from the collection). If you're having any trouble adding a co-creator, please ask on Discord or on Tumblr! Best of luck! There is no minimum word count for this stage.
