The #Maunakea visitor information center, #Onizuka Center for International #Astronomy Visitor Information Station, sits at 9200 feet (2800 meters). Open #365 days a year, the center is a museum, gift shop, mini-observatory, and gateway to the Mauna Kea #Observatory complex. The friendly staff at the information center hold free #stargazing sessions every night, weather permitting. Yes, it is #Hawaii, but it is also a mountain, often lashed by fierce, icy winds and blanketed with snow. Dress appropriately and expect the weather to change is a flash. We traveled to the station on three separate occasions and had a few hours of clear skies only on one night. Plan to go up a few times to avoid disappointment. To summit you'll need a #four-wheel drive vehicle preferably with a Low Range as the first part of the #summit road is steep gravel and the descent feels even steeper. Spend a few hours acclimating at the visitor center as the summit is 13,796 feet (4025 meters). This #time-lapse was made at the visitor center - where you'll see more stars with the naked eye. At the summit, at almost 14,000 feet, the lack of oxygen will keep you from seeing things as crisply.
