Glacier area on Mount Kilimanjaro on the Kenya/Tanzania border in East Africa decreased 85% 1912-2007; from 12.06km2 to 1.85km2. While the loss of glaciers in temperate regions (such as those in the U.S.) has been attributed to warming temperatures from climate change, glacier loss on Kilimanjaro is more likely a result of a local climate change in East Africa that occurred in the late 1800s, resulting in a drier climate. However, causes of the dramatic glacier loss remain largely unknown.

Who are you? I know… who are you? I am me. A giraffe. Oh, that’s nice.
Herding wildebeest! Merr. Merr. Merr. Merr. That’s the sound they make. You can imitate it and thus have a conversation with the creatures. Merr. Merr. Merr.

The ferry from Ukerewe, the largest inland island in Africa, glides across the waters of Lake Victoria towards the Tanzanian mainland. Day 22. Yes, still posting out of order... Bear with me... Not thinking about #winterstormjonas and it draws ever nearer. Instead, thinking again of #tanzania and long hours in the transport on dusty roads wishing I, too, was riding my #bicycle . #nomad #nomadpicturestudios #adpaterniti #antoniodpaterniti #dustyroad (at Tanzania)
Day 23. While everyone is posting images of the snowpocalypse, snowmageddon, iceage2016 etc. I offer this warm image of a Masai warrior performing a traditional Adumu jumping dance just after dawn on a beach in Tanzania. Don't worry, I am not currently toasty in Tanzania. I'm on the East Coast, knee deep in snow, wishing I was jumping on a warm beach in Tanzania. #masai #adumu #jumpingdance #masaijumpingdance #tanzania #nomad #nomadpicturestudios #adpaterniti #antoniodpaterniti #travelphotography #travel (at Dar es Salaam, Tanzania)

#Masai warrior #nomads on the road to #Nairobi. Just outside #Arusha, #Tanzania. This is one of my favorite photos, although lacking photographic merit, it reminds me of my first trip to the #continent of #Africa. After two weeks of site evaluations and meetings with numerous local hospital staffs, the lead medical officer of our team, with a glazed look of exhaustion in his spectacled eyes, said "we need to see some animals..." and with less than 24 hours before our return flight to the USA, we booked a guide service, clamored into a minibus and sped to #Ngorongoro #Crater. The remaining #caldera of an extinct #volcano , Ngorongoro is an #oasis for wildlife and a #bucketlist #safari destination. Predators and prey stock this amazing landscape that has served as a backdrop for #Hollywood classics such as #Hatari with John Wayne. I remember hanging out of the side window of the minibus, as we sped along the highway, to make this photo with my #nikon #N80 #film camera. #nikonnofilter #nomad #nomadpicturestudios #antoniodpaterniti #adpaterniti #travel #travelphotography
Stone Town, #Zanzibar. Also know as Mji Mkongwe meaning "Old Town" in #Swahili. Stone Town was designated a #UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The town is a architectural wonderland, mixing Arab, European, Indian and Persian styles. Narrow criss-cross streets and spice-scented alleys draw countless tourists in search of history, spices and world class diving. The island played a large role in the former slave trade under the control of the Sultanate of Oman in the early 1800s. The slave trade was abolished in 1897. #tanganyika #tanzania #slavetrade #zanzibar #travel #travelphotography #Nomad #nomadpicturestudios #nikon #NikonNoFilter #adpaterniti #antoniodpaterniti
The Zanzibar red colobus monkey (Procolobus kirkii) are endemic to the island of Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania. Mostly white and grey, many have a large patch of red hair on their backs. They are endangered and conservation efforts by the African Convention on the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources are raising awareness through tourism and the designation of protected zones. #zanzibar #zanzibarredcolobus #monkey #procolobuskirkii #endangered #endangeredspecies #tanzania #nomad #nomadpicturestudios #blackandwhite #adpaterniti #antoniodpaterniti
