I just realized that canon aushun's height difference is quite distant than what I have in mind.
before the collezione being released, there's info that hngary was a bit shorter (160 cm). except I forgot about this, so I always thought that their heights are just 3-4 cm apart, with both being at 170-ish cm. I don't really mind the canon though.

As for how I started shipping AusHun, well...that was a trip down memory lane, especially since my stance on it has evolved so much over the years.
I suppose the simplest explanation is I personally have a huge weakness for couples with a happily married vibe, and as portrayed in the Hetalia comic itself AusHun really embodies that. I also just love Austria and Hungary as characters, and how they both have a mixture of what’s often thought of as typically feminine and masculine elements to their personalities but don’t seem strictly bound to traditional gender roles or even think of it as anything to fuss over. There’s a level of acceptance and understanding I really love about their dynamic, and mutual support. You feel they’ll always have each other’s back.
But what really sold it for me was actually learning more about the history of Austria and Hungary as individual countries, and their relations with each other over the centuries. They’ve had a lot of ups and downs, and this added a really fascinating layer of complexity to a ship I already loved. Within the comic their portrayal is positively fluffy-their actual history is definitely not. How do you balance the two out in a way that’s true to character and history? And yet there’s a sense of an unbreakable bond despite all that...I suppose when you’ve been through so much with someone, even having been at odds with them is still a connection in its own right.
So why I started shipping it is a threefold answer: the happy old married couple energy+masc/fem fluidity+real life history with both the good and bad times. AusHun is great to me, and a true OTP of OTPs because it manages to be so steady and yet have such flexibility and nuance to it. I love AusHun and always will, and at the same time the way I love it keeps changing with the more I learn about them and the more I see of their interactions. There’s so much that could have kept them apart, including themselves, but they still triumphed over it in the end to be happy together.
AusHun is a true love that’s constant but never dull, and there’s nothing more thrilling to me than that. Anyway, I’m sure this whole answer got more involved than you were probably expecting, but that was how my journey into AusHun OTPhood just happened to go!
