How are you gonna complain that Nosferatu was too sexual as if Gothic literature didn't originate from social rebellion? As if Bram Stoker's novel didn't have sexual undertones? As if Nosferatu didn't have sexual undertones already? I understand if you didn't expect such upfront sexuality, but don't hate on the movie for it. If it's not for you, that's okay! Taboo topics aren't for everyone; Just remember that Gothic literature is meant to be taboo. A social rebellion. Expressing the dark, barbaric, animalistic, and shunned aspects of human nature. I haven't watched the film YET; But I have taken a course SPECIFICALLY on Gothic literature {and passed}, read Bram Stoker's Dracula, watched both original Nosferatu's multiple times, and immersed myself in Gothic literature for a while now. Gothic horror IS sexual in its essence. It's grotesque and disgusting. Revolting and shameful. That's the point. It's also sensual, emotional, despondent, and FULL of metaphors. It’s EROTIC. If the genre isn't for you, or if certain aspects aren't for you, that's okay. Everyone has their limits, everyone deserves their boundaries.

the thing that makes thomas so compelling in nosferatu 2024 is that he’s downright pathetic but he cares so much about his wife that he turns his patheticness into brave devotion. idk if that makes sense. like he’s SO pathetic but then he puts on his big boy pants and does his best because he’s so devoted to his wife that it doesn’t even matter. “excuse me but she asked for no pickles” ahh marriage. i love him so bad.

It’s kind of crazy to me that Thomas gets flak for trying to get to work on time, or taking a job assignment, despite his wife being worried about it. It’s not really greedy for a lower middle class man with debt and a wife to support (because societal expectations mean she can’t work) to care about not losing his job and it’s not greedy for him to want a slightly better paying job.

It’s also not a reflection of lack of intimacy/love/trust between Thomas and Ellen that he makes financial stability a priority.

Also that the flowers scene is a reflection of Thomas not understanding Ellen, because she says she’s upset about the flowers dying. She’s just had a dream that messed her up that had lilacs in it. It’s not about him getting her flowers it’s about him getting her lilacs after she just had a nightmare heavily featuring them combined with the stress over his upcoming trip. She’s upset about what the flowers represent (a bad omen and a result of him apologizing for leaving for the trip) not him getting her flowers.

I wish I could stay, my love. How should I have earned such a doting wife? (Greta meows, purrs) Ellen, I told you not to let her into bed. Everything I wear, absolutely covered in it. But Greta loves it here. She wishes you to stay, too.

*Thomas only going to Orlok for a business exchange so he can provide for Ellen and they won’t have worry about their financial situation in the future.*

Some people: He is so money hungry.

(Yes, I know Ellen didn’t care about all that stuff and he should’ve listened to her.)

(Yes, Thomas was an idiot for signing the contract he doesn’t understand but it was honestly a lose-lose situation because if Thomas didn’t sign the contract, you think that would stop Orlok? No, it wouldn’t.)

Me every time I think about the contract with Orlok and Thomas:

Me Every Time I Think About The Contract With Orlok And Thomas:

This isn’t like in Rosemary baby where her husband Guy literally gave her up to a Satanic occult just so he can be a famous actor or whatever!

Thomas literally didn’t know! He didn’t understand the language! To him, he was doing it for him and Ellen, he was thinking about their future.

While I do lean more towards Ellen x Thomas than Ellen x Orlok, I’m not going to say “they’re perfect” because no, Ellen and Thomas wasn’t perfect.

Nobody’s relationships in this movie was “perfect”. But there was love.
